Created in 2012, the Follett Institute was initially designed as a one-day professional training session for librarians using Follett School Solution’s Destiny Library Manager.  Since then, digital learning has continued to evolve and so has the Follett Institute. Today the program is a more rounded three-day professional development opportunity for teacher-librarians. Days one and two continue to focus on maximizing use of Destiny – showing Follett customers how to take full advantage of the software and all its features and upgrades – while day three is reserved for exploration. Attendees discuss educational challenges and cultivate networks to promote innovative thinking about libraries.

“Aligned with Follett’s Project Connect and Future Ready Librarians initiatives, Follett Institute is all about helping the teacher-librarian community advance and tackle new challenges around digital literacy, information literacy and curriculum,” said Britten Follett, Vice President of Marketing for Follett School Solutions.

In 2016, Follett increased its number of Follett Institute locations from eight to 15 sites across the U.S. Attendees are pleasantly surprised by session affordability, allowing registration for individual or all three days, and the small group setting. Each Follett Institute is capped at 35 attendees to allow for more personalized attention and encourage local networking. When attendees arrive, some know one another, but most are strangers. By the time lunch rolls around, they’re a group sharing information and making the most of their Destiny product.

Attendees shared the following cheers and takeaways from their Follett Institute experience:

“The presenter was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject area. The day passed quickly as everyone was involved and learning.”

“Being able to collaborate with other librarians to share knowledge and pitfalls was helpful. It was also helpful knowing where to look if I needed additional information or to refresh my knowledge of what I learned today.”

“What a wonderful use of our day! This was my first professional development as a media specialist and it has encouraged me to look for others to go to as well.”
