Follett Achieves Two Million Pound Recycling Milestone

WESTCHESTER, IL, Mar 31, 2014 – For 2013, Follett set a monthly goal to defer 95 percent of its Aurora Distribution Center’s total waste away from landfills through a robust recycle, reuse and repurpose program. Today, Follett proudly announces that it exceeded its goal. In the past year alone, the Aurora Distribution Center recycled more than two million pounds of waste.

This achievement contributes to Follett’s greater effort to minimize its footprint and implement sustainable practices across the organization, including the operations of its home offices and network of more than 940 campus stores.

Home Office Efficiency

Follett recently relocated its River Grove, Oak Brook and Westmont home office locations to a single facility in Westchester, Illinois. In addition to supporting increased collaboration and growth, the Westbrook campus also promotes long term operating efficiencies. The company projects a 17 percent decrease in electrical use through the use of Energy Star rated equipment.

Store-Level Sustainability

Follett has also instituted sustainability strategies at the store operation level. For example, the company introduced a “no bag” policy in fall of 2012. According to this policy, campus store associates no longer automatically place each purchase in a plastic shopping bag and instead encourage customers to simply carry items or use a reusable bag, purse or backpack. Follett’s store network has already eliminated more than 3.5 million shopping bags through this initiative. To learn more about Higher Education’s social responsibility efforts, visit
